CEOLIN,PATRÍCIA; FRANÇA,SUÉLEM A. DE; FROELICH,MENDALLI; SANTOS,MAÍSA P. DOS; PEREIRA,MAYARA P.; QUEIROZ,THAÍS S.; SILVA,FLÁVIA H.S. DA; LISBOA,PATRÍCIA C.; ANDRADE,CLAUDIA M.B.; BAVIERA,AMANDA M.; KAWASHITA,NAIR H..
Abstract: The aim of this study was investigate the effects of a low-protein, high-carbohydrate (LPHC) diet introduced to rats soon after weaning. The animals were distributed in the following groups: LPHC45: fed an LPHC diet (6%-protein, 74%-carbohydrate) for 45 days; C45: fed a control (C) diet (17%-protein, 63%-carbohydrate) for 45 days; R (Reverse): fed with LPHC for 15 days followed by C diet for 30 days. The LPHC45 group showed alterations in the energetic balance with an increase in brown adipose tissue, and in glucose tolerance, and lower final body weight, muscle mass and total protein in blood when compared with C45 group. The HOMA-IR index was similar between LPHC45 and C45 groups, but this parameter was lower in LPHC45 compared with R groups....

A study on the short-term effect of cafeteria diet and pioglitazone on insulin resistance and serum levels of adiponectin and ghrelin BJMBR
Colombo,G.; Bazzo,M.L.; Nogueira,C.L.; Colombo,M.D.H.P.; Schiavon,L.L.; d’Acampora,A.J..
The interaction between ghrelin and adiponectin is still controversial. We investigated the effect of cafeteria diet and pioglitazone on body weight, insulin resistance, and adiponectin/ghrelin levels in an experimental study on male Wistar rats. The animals were divided into four groups of 6 rats each, and received balanced chow with saline (CHOW-O) or pioglitazone (CHOW-P), or a cafeteria diet with saline (CAFE-O) or pioglitazone (CAFE-P). The chow/cafeteria diets were administered for 35 days, and saline/pioglitazone (10 mg·kg body weight-1·day-1) was added in the last 14 days prior to euthanasia. CAFE-O animals had a higher mean final weight (372.5 ± 21.01 g) than CHOW-O (317.66 ± 25.11 g, P = 0.017) and CHOW-P (322.66 ± 28.42 g, P = 0.035) animals....

Bohlouli,Somayeh; Khazaei,Mozafar; Rabzia,Arezou; Khazaei,Mohammad Rasool; Sadeghi,Ehsan.
Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent disease in reproductive age women. Adiponectin and Nitric oxide (NO) have an important role in physiologic functions especially in human reproductive system. Levels of NO increased in the endometriosis patients but serum adiponectin levels decreased in woman with endometriosis. The aim of this study was to determine adiponectin effect on nitric oxide secretion by cultured normal and endometriotic human endometrial stromal cells. In this experimental study, normal (n= 10) and endometriotic endometrial biopsies (n= 10) were taken in sterile condition. Stromal cells isolated and cultured in in DMEM/ F12 medium and treated with adiponectin concentrations (0, 10, 100, and 200 ng/ml) for 24 and 48 hours. NO assay was done...

Adiponectin inhibits oxidization-induced differentiation of T helper cells through inhibiting costimulatory CD40 and CD80 BJMBR
Xiao,Y.; Deng,T.; Shang,Z.; Wang,D..
Adiponectin is a multifunctional adipokine that has several oligomeric forms in the blood stream, which broadly regulates innate and acquired immunity. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to observe the differentiation of T helper (Th) cells and expression of costimulatory signaling molecules affected by adiponectin. The mRNA and protein expression levels of adiponectin and its receptors in oxidized low density lipoprotein cholesterol-treated endothelial cells were assayed by real time PCR and immunofluorescence. The endothelial cells were then treated with adiponectin with or without adipoR1 or adipoR2 siRNA and co-cultured with T lymphocytes. The distribution of Th1, Th2 and Th17 subsets were assayed by flow cytometry. The effects of adiponectin on...

Adiponectin is protective against endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced apoptosis of endothelial cells in sepsis BJMBR
Hou,Yun; Wang,Xi Feng; Lang,Zhi Qiang; Jin,Yin Chuan; Fu,Jia Rong; Xv,Xiao Min; Sun,Shi Tian; Xin,Xin; Zhang,Lian Shuang.
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is a critical molecular mechanism involved in the pathogenesis of sepsis. Hence, strategies for alleviating this stress may be essential for preventing cardiovascular injuries under sepsis. Adiponectin is secreted by adipocytes and its levels are decreased in sepsis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effects of adiponectin treatment on endothelial cells and its mechanism. Male Wistar rats underwent cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) before being treated with adiponectin (72 and 120 μg/kg). The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in plasma, histological structure, and apoptosis of endothelial cells were evaluated. In vitro, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were treated with adiponectin at...

Gasparotto,Aline Simas; Borges,Diego Olschowsky; Zandoná,Marília Remuzzi; Ramos,Mauricio Jacques; Meihnardt,Nelson Guardiola; Mattevi,Vanessa S..
Abstract Our aim was to investigate if single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in the 5′ regions of leptin (LEP, -2548 G > A, rs7799039), resistin (RETN, -420 C > G, rs1862513) and adiponectin (ADIPOQ, -11391 G > A, rs17300539 and -11377 C > G, rs266729) genes were related to changes in body mass index (BMI) and metabolic variables after bariatric surgery in 60 extremely obese individuals. At baseline, ADIPOQ -11391 A-allele carriers showed higher plasma adiponectin and lower total cholesterol levels when compared to G/G homozygotes. Approximately 32 months post-surgery, a mean reduction of 35% in BMI and an important improvement in metabolic profiles were observed. In addition, for the ADIPOQ -11377 polymorphism, a higher decrease in...

Adiponectin serum levels in female dogs bearing mammary gland carcinomas Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Souza,I.B.R.; Cardoso,C.V.; Pereira,A.A.F.; Poppe,S.C.; Bondan,E.F..

Are the beneficial cardiovascular effects of simvastatin and metformin also associated with a hormone-dependent mechanism improving insulin sensitivity? BJMBR
Bulcão,C.; Giuffrida,F.M.A.; Ribeiro-Filho,F.F.; Ferreira,S.R.G..
In addition to lipid-lowering and cardiovascular protective actions, statins may have beneficial effects on insulin sensitivity. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of simvastatin therapy on insulin resistance and on leptin, adiponectin, and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, as compared to metformin, in overweight pre-diabetic subjects. Forty-one subjects with BMI >25 kg/m² and impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance were randomized to take simvastatin, 20 mg/day (N = 20) or metformin, 1.7 g/day (N = 21) for 16 weeks. Blood samples for the determination of metabolic, hormonal, and inflammatory parameters were obtained at baseline and after each treatment. After metformin therapy, significant reductions in mean BMI...

Association between elevated adiponectin level and adverse outcomes in patients with heart failure: a systematic review and meta-analysis BJMBR
Bai,Wenwei; Huang,Jingjing; Zhu,Min; Liu,Xiaoyong; Tao,Jianping.
Studies regarding the prognostic value of circulating adiponectin level in patients with heart failure are conflicting. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the association between elevated circulating adiponectin level and adverse outcomes in patients with heart failure. We searched PubMed and Embase databases from their inception to June 2018. Original observational studies that investigated the prognostic value of adiponectin in heart failure patients and reported all-cause mortality or combined endpoints of death/readmission as outcome measure were included. Pooled risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated by higher versus lower circulating adiponectin level. A total of 7 studies involving 862 heart failure patients...

Circulating levels of adiponectin and extent of coronary artery disease in patients undergoing elective coronary angiography BJMBR
Souza,R.A.; Alves,C.M.R.; de Oliveira,C.S.V.; Reis,A.F.; Carvalho,A.C..
Adiponectin (APN), an adipose tissue-released adipokine with demonstrated anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic properties, is encoded by a gene whose polymorphisms are associated with presence of coronary artery disease (CAD). Serum APN levels are inversely related with presence and complexity of CAD. Within this context, we sought to compare levels of total APN and its high molecular weight form (HMW APN) according to clinical presentation and extent of CAD in patients undergoing elective cardiac catheterization. From March 2008 to June 2010, clinical data and blood samples for APN and HMW APN measurements were collected from 415 subjects undergoing cardiac catheterization at two tertiary centers. CAD extent was estimated by the number of coronary...

Leptin and adiponectin in the female life course BJMBR
Lecke,S.B.; Morsch,D.M.; Spritzer,P.M..
Adipose tissue secretes a variety of adipokines, including leptin and adiponectin, which are involved in endocrine processes regulating glucose and fatty metabolism, energy expenditure, inflammatory response, immunity, cardiovascular function, and reproduction. The present article describes the fluctuations in circulating leptin and adiponectin as well as their patterns of secretion in women from birth to menopause. During pregnancy, leptin and adiponectin seem to act in an autocrine/paracrine fashion in the placenta and adipose tissue, playing a role in the maternal-fetal interface and contributing to glucose metabolism and fetal development. In newborns, adiponectin levels are two to three times higher than in adults. Full-term newborns have...

Lupine as a potential agent against diet-induced obesity through adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase pathway: crude oil versus nanoemulsion formulations BJPS
Mohafez,Omar Mahmoud; Alhaider,Ibrahim Abdelrahman; Shehata,Tamer Mohamed; Mohamed,Maged Elsayed.
Obesity represents a major challenge to the pharmaceutical community due to the minimal availability of anti-obesity drugs and the drawbacks of current weight-loss agents. The study described herein presents lupine oil, in two pharmaceutical formulations, as a potential anti-obesity agent via its effect on different physiological, biochemical, and hormonal parameters. Rats were divided into two groups; one group was continued on a standard commercial rodent diet and served as the non-obese control. The other group was fed a high-fat diet for 7 weeks to prepare an obese rat model. Then, the obese rats were divided into groups to receive 100 mg/kg of the crude lupine oil or nanoemulsion for 10 or 20 days. Lupine oil showed a potent body weight-reducing...
